Hand-dug well

The traditional and still most common method of obtaining groundwater in rural areas of the developing world is by means of dug wells, mostly hand-dug wells. With the prior knowledge that groundwater is present and rather close to the surface, a hole (5-30 metres) is dug until the groundwater level is reached. Inflowing groundwater is collected and can be extracted with the help of pumps or buckets.
