Rapid sand filtration is a physical drinking water purification method. As freshwater flows through a sand- and gravel bed, the majority of suspended particles are removed. Rapid sand filters provide rapid and efficient removal of relatively large suspended particles but they cannot provide safe drinking water unless pre-treatment (i.e. coagulation-flocculation) and post-treated (e.g. chlorine disinfection) is applied.
