This toolkit is a compilation of existing relevant sanitation focused emergency response mechanisms, technologies and experiences to support institutions and local government units in disaster response. It was developed in the aftermath of cyclone Ketsana in 2009.

LEAD, a local women’s organisation, promotes SODIS for the treatment of drinking water at household level, making use of its existing network of sangams (women self-help groups). In addition, teachers and students of local schools are trained. For the supply of PET-bottles, a micro-credit system was implemented.

The publication analyses the appropriateness of anaerobic baffled reactors (ABRs) for on-site primary sanitation in low-income communities. COD removal in domestic wastewater by a pilot ABR (3000L) was assessed. Results indicate that COD was sufficiently reduced for the reuse of the water in agriculture, but not for directly discharging it into natural surface or groundwater bodies.
