Seeding refers to the introduction of a sample of a living and active community of microorganisms (an inoculum) into a reactor in order to initiate a biological degradation process (e.g. anaerobic digestion, activated sludge). The microorganism, if they feel comfortable, will grow and create the optimum conditions for the metabolic degradation or elimination of pollutants entering the tank.
